The following programs serve to help families and individuals make informed decisions and take appropriate actions that protect our environment.
This learning center in downtown Charleston features tools, techniques, educational programs, and technical assistance that enhance natural resource conservation and minimize threats from natural disasters.
EPA estimates that the average household disposes of one pound of hazardous waste each year. This program addresses the proper handling, storage, and disposal of corrosive wastes, toxic wastes, ignitable wastes, and reactive wastes while minimizing threats to the water.
An intensive 6- to 10-hour food safety course developed by the National Restaurant Association and aimed at those working in or preparing for a career in the food service industry. Program emphasis includes the proper disposal of food and beverage wastes, and it teaches food workers not to dump oil, liquids, food wastes, or litter into storm drains.
This program provides intensive training on waste reduction, hazardous household waste, and recycling to residents who want to help educate their communities about turning garbage into resources. Master Waste Educators receive approximately 40 hours of training, tours, and a reference book. Graduates participate in an additional 25 hours of rewarding educational outreach projects.
Help Protect South Carolina Water Quality is an educational series that features household water quality problems and solutions. Topics include laundry problems, leaks, water conservation, concentrations of iron or manganese, dull or cloudy dishware, water treatment equipment and systems, contaminants, and hard water.
